Gunite vs Shotcrete Pools: Understanding Custom Pool Construction in Atlanta

Gunite vs Shotcrete Pools: Understanding Custom Pool Construction in Atlanta

When researching custom pool construction in Atlanta, you will encounter two terms repeatedly: gunite and shotcrete. Many homeowners assume these are different construction methods — but the truth is more nuanced.

Understanding the relationship between gunite and shotcrete helps you ask better questions and make informed decisions about your custom pool project.

Gunite vs Shotcrete: The Technical Difference

Both gunite and shotcrete refer to concrete applied pneumatically (sprayed at high velocity) to create pool shells. The difference lies in when water is added to the mix:

Gunite (Dry-Mix Process)

In gunite application, dry cement and aggregate are mixed and pumped through a hose. Water is added at the nozzle, just before the material is sprayed onto the rebar framework. This gives the applicator precise control over water content and consistency.

Shotcrete (Wet-Mix Process)

Shotcrete arrives pre-mixed with water from the batch plant. The complete wet mixture is pumped through hoses and applied to the pool structure. Modern shotcrete formulations include admixtures that improve workability and strength.

Which Is Better for Atlanta Pools?

The honest answer: in the hands of experienced crews, both methods produce excellent results. The quality of your pool shell depends far more on:

  • Crew experience and training
  • Proper rebar placement and spacing
  • Correct material thickness (typically 6-8 inches)
  • Appropriate curing conditions and timing
  • Quality control during application

Many premier Atlanta pool builders use the terms interchangeably because the finished product is essentially identical when properly executed.

Why Concrete Pools Dominate the Luxury Market

Regardless of whether you call it gunite or shotcrete, pneumatically applied concrete offers advantages that fiberglass and vinyl liner pools cannot match:

Unlimited Design Freedom

Concrete pools can be any shape, size, or depth. Freeform lagoons, geometric rectangles, infinity edges, and custom features are all possible. The only limits are your imagination and property constraints.

Integrated Features

Unlike prefabricated shells, concrete construction allows features to be built directly into the pool structure:

  • Tanning ledges (Baja shelves) at any depth
  • Beach entries with gradual slopes
  • Raised spas with spillover effects
  • Swim-up bars and seating areas
  • Grottos and water features
  • Vanishing edges and perimeter overflow designs

Long-Term Durability

A properly constructed concrete pool lasts 50+ years with appropriate maintenance. The shell will not fade, crack from UV exposure, or require replacement like fiberglass and vinyl alternatives.

Finish Options

Concrete pools accept premium finish surfaces unavailable with other construction types:

  • Pebble aggregate (PebbleTec, PebbleSheen)
  • Quartz aggregate finishes
  • Glass bead surfaces
  • Traditional plaster in custom colors
  • Tile and mosaic interiors

The Construction Process

Whether using gunite or shotcrete, the construction sequence follows the same pattern:

1. Excavation

The pool shape is excavated according to engineered plans, typically 6-12 inches larger than the finished dimensions to allow for shell thickness.

2. Steel Installation

Rebar grids are tied in place to create the structural framework. Quality builders use #3 or #4 rebar on 12-inch centers, properly tied and supported at correct distances from the soil.

3. Plumbing Rough-In

All circulation plumbing, returns, drains, and equipment connections are installed and pressure tested before concrete application.

4. Concrete Application

Crews spray gunite or shotcrete to specified thickness, typically completing the entire shell in one day. Experienced applicators ensure proper compaction and consistent coverage.

5. Curing

The shell cures for 14-28 days, during which it must be kept moist to achieve maximum strength. Spring temperatures in Atlanta provide ideal curing conditions.

6. Tile and Coping

Waterline tile is installed along the perimeter, followed by coping stone that caps the pool edge and provides the transition to decking.

7. Interior Finish

The final interior surface — whether plaster, pebble, or quartz — is applied and the pool is filled within hours to prevent drying.

Choosing Your Atlanta Pool Builder

When evaluating pool builders, focus less on whether they use gunite vs shotcrete and more on:

  • Years of experience in Metro Atlanta
  • Portfolio of completed projects
  • References from recent clients
  • Licensing, insurance, and warranty coverage
  • Design capabilities and project management
  • Subcontractor relationships and quality control

Spring Construction Timing

Spring remains the optimal time to begin concrete pool construction in Atlanta. Ground conditions, curing temperatures, and contractor availability all favor March through May starts.

Homeowners who begin their projects in spring enjoy completed pools by summer — while those who wait often face extended timelines and limited scheduling options.
